Why Heatstroke Happens – And How to Prevent It

Every year, thousands suffer from heatstroke in the GCC. But why does it happen, and how can we avoid it?

What is heatstroke?

It’s a life-threatening condition caused when the body temperature rises above 40°C and fails to cool itself. In the UAE and other Gulf countries, this happens frequently due to intense outdoor heat and humidity.

According to the World Health Organization, heatstroke can lead to confusion, unconsciousness, and even death if untreated.

Why it happens:

  • Dehydration
  • High humidity (sweat can’t evaporate)
  • Overexertion in hot conditions

Warning signs:

  • Hot, dry skin
  • Dizziness and nausea
  • Headache and rapid pulse
  • Confusion or fainting
